June 28, 2017 Outdoor Game report VS Cosmos – Bragging Bat #18

Match Report

Winnipeg vs. Cosmos

Bragging Bat #18

June 28 2017

Another Wednesday weather forecast for the day being the worst of the week, except of course the weekend. Arrive at the Park under grey cloudy skies. Much discussion about restricting the overs etc. but decided to play the game at 20 overs & hope the light holds up. No toss. Ray orders his players to field 1st. Game underway by 6:00 with the sun making a hazy appearance.

Taverner openers Hein & Sudarshan weather the opening quick attack then start to score a little more freely from the spinners putting on 32 until Su is bowled by Saif for 17. He is replaced by Garvin who is quickly dispatched C & B by Saif for 0. Nigel joined Hein & between them they added 50 for next wicket aided by a number of dropped catches some easy & 1 unlucky when Ricky almost held a diving catch only to have it jarred loose when he hit the ground.

Nigel was eventually out caught by Monty off of Saif for 17. Next in Andrew only stayed briefly before being trapped LBW again by Saif for 0. Next in was a ringer claiming to be Karran, Shri, he & Hein added some runs before Hein was C & B by Ricky for 47. Anil joined Shri & with a few unorthodox shots added 7 before being run out. Leaving Shri to face a couple of balls with David before being given out obstructing the field for 11.

Taverners score at the end of 20 overs 108 according to the score book but the numbers there add up to 112.

Bowling performance of the innings, Saif 4 for 21 from 4 overs

By the time of the break the sun has been out for a while & the evening was perfect for cricket.

When Cosmos started their innings it was decided to alternate ends after 5 overs to save time

Captain Kevin & Monty open the innings against David & Sudarshan with David being the more economical eventually getting Kevin bowled for 9. Monty is joined by Suresh who lasts an over or so before being stumped by Chris off Anil. Ramya joins Monty & plays a minor role in adding 28 before being caught off Andrew for 5. Ricky is next out, run out for 0. Ikram joins Monty & they push the score to 90 before Shri has Monty stumped for 54 bettering his previous best of 8.

Next out is Ikram caught out from Garvin for 12.

At this point Cosmos need 12 runs from 2 overs for the win.

The Cosmos tail try some suicidal running but are defeated by the wily field placing by Taverners. Cosmos end up 2 short at the end thanks to 2 more run outs & another stumping.

Bowling David 1-7, Anil 1-22, Andrew 1-30, Shri 2-16, Garvin 1- 16.

A great game played down to the wire with the game that could have gone either way. Cricket at its best

The Post game was as usual at Nigel’s with the BBQ busy with burgers & hot dogs. A great attendance by both teams with the presentation of the Bragging Bat & speeches by both captains. Hein expressed his pleasure at pointing out that it was usually Taverners that dropped all the catches not the opposition.

Just as the evening was winding down Anil arrived from a meeting. Fortunately there were only a couple of beers left or we may have been there all night.

Karran was selected as Man of the Match for standing down

June 21, 2017 Outdoor Game report VS 5 Rivers CC

Match Report
Taverners C.C. Vs. 5 Rivers
21st June 2017

The longest day of the year produced a cool wet & windy day. Both teams arrived at the park more in vain hope than anything, most leaving their kit in their cars, & waiting for the game to be called, but just around 6 o’clock the skies cleared & we had a glorious evening for the game. The mat was down & covered but the south end had blown free & was quite damp so we bowled only from the North end. 5 Rivers batted 1st against David & Sudarshan David had the #1 caught behind by Chris but Su could not get a breakthrough. They were replaced by Daniel & Andrew but the batsman continued to score quite freely until Andrew had the top scorer caught behind, 5 Rivers 65 for 2. The next bowling change was Garvin & a Motley Crew, Garvin took a magnificent one handed caught & bowled & Philip bowling his usual stuff had the next man run out after kicking over 1 stump but completing the task by demolishing the rest. Keith grunted his way to a “bowled” plus several wides. It was left to Andrew to clean up the innings with a hat trick. 5 Rivers 129 for 9 with 19 wides David 1 – 9, Daniel 1 – 26, Andrew 4 – 22, Garvin 2 -18 & Keith 1 -18

Taverners openers Hein & Sudarshan gave us a better start than we had this year Hein scoring 14 & Sudarshan 22. They were replaced by Garvin who hit 2 big sixes on his way to 25 & Daniel grafted a steady 6. Nigel came in & left quite quickly having been given “out” LBW by Karl. Chris & Andrew pushed the score along & looked as though they could bring the game home but after hitting a big six Andrew was very well caught for 22. Soon after Chris was bowled for 8, by this time we had run out of overs being 123 for 7 with 16 wides, a loss by 7. We are getting closer.
The post game was at Chomo’s hosting for Keith celebrating both his & his mothers birthday complete with cake. As if to honour what we think was a 1st, Andrews hat trick, all 11 players joined us for the evening, which despite the god awful day we spent outside in the garden.
Next game is the Bragging Bat, are we reaching our peak at the right time??

Match Report

Taverners Vs Sheer E Maples

June 14 2017

Despite an earlier downpour & the ominous grey clouds The Sher E Maples side were at the park early & ready to go. Taverners conscripted Rene ready for his final game before heading to Toronto to take the toss which he won & elected for Taverners to bat. It was decided that all the overs would come from 1 end to save time.

Taverners opened with Sid & Hein & they started with caution with only 3 coming off the 1st 2 overs & Hein being bowled for 0. Anil joined Sid & the runs started to come at a brisk pace until Anil was stumped for 16 Rene joined Sid but lack of playing time showed until he was caught for 4. Sid was joined by Nigel & the runs came at a brisker pace, when Sid looked to be caught on the boundary 1 handed but the fielder sportingly stated that he had stepped over the boundary. Sid was finally bowled for 34. Nigel continued with Alli until he was caught for 13. This was the end of Taverners scoring with Garvin adding 2 Andrew 3 & Sudarshan 2 & Alli not out 22. Taverners final total after 20 overs 113.

Maples started briskly scoring easily from Sudarshan & a little more slowly from Sid scoring 28 until Sid had the opener caught at the wicket for 14. The next pair continued the scoring until Garvin had #3 stumped for 12 & Andrew, after promising “no wides” eventually bowled a straight one & had the opener bowled for 32.

At this point the rains came heavily & the covers were hauled out & with the thunder it looked like the end of the day. But the rain stopped & the umpires decided that it was OK to resume although the mat was a little wet.

Maples with some suicide running & Taverners with some inept fielding brought the game to a point with a new batsman at the wicket 5 runs needed & 4 balls left Sid bowled a wide & the next ball was driven high for a 6 & the game. Taverners lose by 4 wickets

The post game gathering was at Daniel’s where his wife had prepared a fine array of snacks & a hot dish of Chicken curry. But it was a poor turnout from the Taverner players again, with only 6 players including Daniel in attendance. This was very disappointing considering that it was Rene’s last game before he moves to a new life in Toronto. The Prez. made a presentation & Rene responded with an emotional farewell speech likening Taverners to family.

Those of us who made the effort were more than satisfied with the quality & the quantity of the food & the conversations around the bar into the evening.

On the drive home I pondered the idea that this whole Taverner post game get together had passed its glory days & that maybe we should just retire to some local bar afterwards as we do for the winter games, because it seems that we get as many players after a 6 a side game at the post game meetings as we do after an 11 a side game. This would free up potential hosts & save them money that they use to supply food. But it would also mean that no funds would be generated from the beer sales except to the bar owner.

An alternative would be to charge each player $10 post game fee for which they would receive 2 drinks & if they choose to go home the social fund would be that much richer.

June 07, 2017 Outdoor Game report VS Blues CC

Match Report

Taverners v Blues

June 07 2017

We were lucky again as earlier in the week Wednesday was supposed to be cool & wet but we had a sunny warm evening.

Taverners won the toss & put the Blues in to bat. This was the Blues 1st game of the season & most of their 1st team squad played to get ready for their 1st League game on Saturday. They opened with Manoj & Devin & Devin managed to steal the strike for at least half of the 1st 10 overs. The Taverners bowlers apart from Sid struggled to keep the runs in check until Garvin had Manoj caught for 21. The next 2 batsmen in were able to score freely until they were both stumped easily chasing runs, Sukhi for 27 & Johal for 24 both from Alli. Devin eventually retired with 71 & the last 2 batsmen Heera (20) & Jigar (12) played out the overs to register a total of 188

Of the bowlers only Sid 0-18 Alli 2-27 in 3 overs & Karran 0-29 in 4 are worthy of a mention.

In reply Taverners opened with Sid & Garvin. Sid soon succumbed to Happy for 5 & Alli followed soon after with a ballooned catch for 1. Garvin (24) & Nigel ((35) managed to make the score respectable with a 50 partnership. But by this time Taverners were well behind the clock & the result never in doubt. Hein made 11 & Philip 8 before they were both caught, leaving Keith (6) & Ray(1) to play out the overs. Taverners 114 for 6.

A loss by 74 runs.

Not an embarrassing result considering the Blues are a Premier Division side & playing a warm up game.

Post game was at Chomo’s with the food supplied by Sudarshan & his good lady wife. A little later in the evening we were joined by 4 or 5 Cosmos players & as a result all the beers were consumed. The Cosmos guys outlasted the Taverners leaving just Chomo & myself as the Taverner reps.
