Jan 19th, 2020 Taverner’s curling in the Manitoba Open

Our 2020  Manitoba Curling Association bonspiel came to an end at Heather this morning as we dropped a 6-3 decision. Playing was Ray (skip), Keith (third), Chris (second) and Garvin (lead).  Jon cheered and was fifth man.

After taking one in the first end, we gave up 4, and were generally playing off of the back foot thereafter.  We clawed back with 2 to get within 1, but gave up singles in 4 and 5 to be three down.  At that point, running out of gas, we conceded, to the surprise of our opposition.
Overall I think it was a successful bonspiel.  We were generally competitive, won a game, had 8 Taverners play and also had Members attend as gallery, which was much appreciated.

Jan 18th, 2020 Taverner’s curling in the Manitoba Open

3:00pm game

This is not a misprint. Taverners advance.

Taverners advanced to the playoff round with a 6-3 victory at Fort Garry.   The team comprised Garvin, Lead, Ray, Second, Nigel, Third, and Keith, Skip.

We took 1 in the first, stole two in the second and one more in the third end.  They responded with 2 in the 4th, and we countered with 2 in the fifth.   They took a single in six, and as it was the “bell” end, we ran the out of rocks in 7.  As we didn’t  need to throw our last rock it ended, officially 6-3 in 6.
With the win, we have a bye tonight and play tomorrow 9 am at Heather on Youville in St.Boniface.
The lineup will be Keith, Chris, Jon, and Garvin.
Woo hoo.

Jan 18th, 2020 Taverner’s curling in the Manitoba Open

9am game
After a promising start we took a single in the first end.  Our opponent made a poor last rock in the second, as a result gassing a possible 6 and turning it into a simple 2.  Alas our undoing was the third, where we gave up a steal of 5.  After taking one in the fourth (counting stone was a beautiful draw from Chris Emery) we shook hands at 7-2.

Really the only differences between us were youth, skill and fitness.

Thanks to Martin for playing his first game and belated thanks to Chomo for attending last night’s game.
3 pm will be at the Fort Garry on Archibald with Ray, Keith, Nigel and Garvin up.

Jan 16th, 2020 Taverner’s curling in the Manitoba Open

The game started well enough (we won the toss) . . . but that trend changed abruptly .

We played our first game at Fort Garry curling club this evening on the 9 pm draw, the team comprising Jon, Garvin, Keith and Ray.
In short, our opposition played well, and we didn’t play up to our capabilities. They stole the entire score, and we shook hands after 4 ends, being down 11-0.
Tomorrow we play on the Noon draw at Elmwood curling club, 300 Brazier Street.  It will be Keith, Nigel, Andrew and Jon.  Thereafter, we expect to play at 6 pm but will have to advise once we get further information.
Hopefully, with the better time, we will have a gallery.  We missed you.

Jan 05th, 2020 Indoor Game report VS AICC

Taverners Vs AICC

Sunday Jan 5 2020

I missed the 1st few overs of the game but it was obvious when I arrived that it was a typical Taverner/AICC encounter with plenty of “chat” from both sides. For some reason that I never discovered Chomo dropped himself & played “gimpy” David who could only progress around the pitch at a sort of penguin waddle.

Taverners batted first with Anil (27) & Andrew (25) & with extras the pair put on 56.Next up were Sid (50) & David (4) who managed to put on 55 David managed a quick waddle on the 5th or final ball of each over to keep Sid on strike. The final pair Imdad (41) & Martin (0) added 49 to the total with Martin playing the same role as David but at a slightly slower pace. He was advised at one point that he should start running on the 5th ball to ensure getting in before the end of the over.

Taverners total 160

AICC started well with their openers hitting the ball very hard but unfortunately too often straight at a fielder or a little too high after 4 or so overs the new ball was hit too high & ended up on the ceiling from where we couldn’t retrieve it. The only substitute available was an older & softer ball that they could not hit so hard. Both batsmen scored 17 to end with a total of 36.Next pair & I can’t decipher any of the names was dominated by 1 player scoring a fine 48 & his partner -2 for a total of 48 This left 74 for the last pair to get the win.Andy tried but could only get 23 & his partner 9 for a total of 33.

AICC total 119

Taverners win by 41

Bowling: Sid 2 – 26, Andrew 1 – 22, Martin 1 -28, Imdad 1 – 35, Anil 0 – 24

Post game festivities were as usual at the Cambridge where the skipper earned extra Kudos by getting the glasses & the beer but we in the end denied him a tip. Anil announced that his temporary retirement has come to an end & he will be returning to his drug running activities on Monday, again involving a lot of travel.
