TAVERNERS GAME REPORT #5

28/July/21 vs Lions

This was the inaugural Tim’s Time Challenge game against Lions. A very good contingent of Taverners arrived to lay the matting and markers. Once again we were greeted with the task already completed with the exception of the boundary markers. Another beautiful day with a heat scorcher for the early part of the game. Once again our fearless leader arranged for us to take the field first as the toss was lost. A good contingent of supporters on hand including the after event host who chose not to play.

In short we did not look very good in the defensive part of the game. Our bowling was not that bad, however the opposition lead by Kamta and Imdad consisting of players from the ages of 13 ro 18 just appeared to play exceptionally well beyond their years. Batting seemed simple. The outfield was extremely hard with inconsistent bounce causing some consternation amongst our fielders. Nicholas just avoided sustaining a serious head injury with one ball which sharply bounced when he seemed to have corralled it on the way to him. There were a few other similar deviations causing our captain to be maliciously heckled on the boundary. Three fabulous catches in the very windy outfield by Sudarshan and Zeissman.

We were asked to chase 173. Two wickets to Karran and Sudarshan each. Our batting seemed destined to just play the game out. Despite a fairly sedate 37 by Sid, we never looked to challenge the massive total set. We did manage a score in the vicinity of 125 for the loss of eight wickets.  The young opposition were very good in the field displaying agility, speed and game presence. Kudos to the senior Lion’s players for the mentoring and coaching of what appears to be an exceptional team in the making.

Three of our own are instrumental in developing this team Garvin, Kamta and Imdad.

A planned after event at Emery’s with another mini Bar B Q in honour of our guest found only Taverners and imdad in attendance. This did not deter the usual banter. Garvin did mention that Chomo swung both ways.  Azad took the opportunity to use the game as a coaching opportunity for Jude once again. He was kind enough to join us at the after event. Thanks to Chris for hosting. Next game against Bloomfield.

July 16, 2021 The Bragging Bat Game

TAVERNERS GAME REPORT #4

21/JULY/21 VS COSMOS

A game most of us thought would not be played due to inclement weather. The rain held off for most of the day allowing for a dry field and cooler conditions than the previous games. The early arrival of some of our regulars ensured that the matting and markers were employed. Once again Azad used the game as an opportunity to train one of his recruits.

The toss was lost and the opposition chose to bat. Shalin batted well for a top score of 27. After 5 overs the scores was 52 and it looked like we would be chasing a massive total. Some very tight bowling in the middle overs with exceptional field placement saw the batting team struggle to get runs flowing. This produced some injudicious shot making. Cosmos was bundled out in the 19th over for a paltry 87 by their standards. The scorer took pity and added an arbitrary 5 runs to get them a more respectable score of 92. All bowlers were accurate with their line and length, Sid and Imdad accounted for two wickets each. Karran  and Sudarshan (again the pick of the bowlers) one wicket each. After being hit for a six Shlock taunted Sudarshan with “bowler’s name”  the very next ball cleared the stumps away with the same retort from Sudarshan. There was one run out. The secret weapon was held back until the penultimate over wrecking the last three wickets for 1 run which incidentally a wide. Intelligent bowling of offering the ball on the same spot saw these batsmen gift their wickets into the wind in the deep mid on and mid off. Sensational by Nigel Wilcox.

With a relatively small total Sid started his inning like someone thirsty for beer. After three overs the score was 29 of which 24 were scored by Sid, he went on to score 51. Garvin fell for 4 runs bringing Hein to the wicket. Despite his second visit to the crease it was more like his first as the previous game was a two ball appearance. He seemed to find form after a week and finished with an unbeaten 24. Imdad was adjudged caught behind but insists it was LBW for no score, with Anil making a short cameo also. Sudarshan finished off the game with a four in the 16th over providing Taverners with a convincing victory in this version of the outdoor Bragging Bat Challenge.

We retired to Chomo’s where the mini barbecue followed with a good showing from both teams. Thanks to Jon for an excellent beer selection, Keith and Sudarshan on the grille and of course Chomo and his wife for hosting the event.

GRUMPY INVITATIONAL 2021

16/JULY/2021

We assembled at Carman Golf Course on the predetermined day for a day of fun and camaraderie with some golfing mixed in between. Another hot sunny day in Southern Manitoba. Although temperatures got as high as 37c, the constant breeze made it a remarkably tolerable day, felt closer to 28c.

A total of 19 participants engaged themselves in the tournament, this included a compliment of five invitees. It appears most were in attendance for the fun and libations. Have been told that one of the groups were quite inebriated after the fifth hole.

Without your continued contributions over the years this tournament would not be the successful event it has turned into.

The best have been left for last. The after event was attended by all participants at the golf game. This is only the second time in the history of the event this has occurred, the first was the inaugural tournament in Warren host by Jon Paige. We were joined by three additional members for the after event; Jon Paige, Imdad Alli and David Hakes. David was adjudged the winner of the President’s Award for participation and conducting himself in a gentleman like manner amongst his peers. A $50 gift card was presented in honour of past Taverners who exemplified these traits.

Jon as usual volunteered to handle and deliver beer purchases. An absolute wonderful selection was provided which was quickly demolished. Kelsey our hostess graciously tasked herself with purchasing additional beer at the local store to supplement our depleted stock. Thank you very much Jon and Kelsey.

Our hosts Karran and especially Kelsey once again went above and beyond ensuring we were all well fed and all minor needs were met. Cutters started the evening with curried chicken, which was gone in a very short space of time. We were allowed to socialize and handle the requirements related to announcing the tournament winner and prize distribution before moving unto the main mean. This consisted of Byriani Rice, Bar-B-Q (two day marinaded) Pork Loin, Jerk style Bar-B-Q chicken all prepared by our hosts. This was complimented with store bought coleslaw.  Watermelon was served as a palate cleanser after the meal. Quite a number of us stayed on the cool deck with enough breeze to keep the bugs away. Good conversation and tall stories told of our prowess in various areas of sport and other topics. Karran and Kelsey your continuous support and preparations in hosting this event can never be appreciated as it should be, we are very thankful.

TAVERNERS CRICKET MATCH REPORT 3

GAME ON 14/JULY/2021

Once again another beautiful evening for a game of cricket. On debut for the season were Anil and Hein.

Emery in a supporter role complained about feeling left out of the team, no sympathy from Jon or the scribe. He did assist with umpiring duties. The long unseen Azad on show umpiring using the game as a training session for one of his new protégé’s.

Our illustrious captain tempting faith showed up in his Italy football shirt throwing the gauntlet down to the President. Rumour is Chomo may not be a member in the very near future. He won us the toss and we elected to bat. Hein & Sid opened the inning against one bowler who was exceptional. After a short visit at the crease Hein rejoined us in the pavilion. In his defense he was castles by an excellent Yorker, indicating the ball swung a lot. Sid went on to score 50. Kohanik lasted a bit however did not trouble the scorer. Nick Jones and Zeissman also paid a short visit to the crease with limited success. Anil looked at sea for most of his inning of 30. His dot balls were impressive if he was bowling. A short cameo for a blistering 24 by Imdad  who had reason to leave an impression was evident. A few good strokes by Nigel and some scoring success with extras and wides amassing 36 gave us a total of 155.

Sher-e-maples struggled from the first over. A remarkable spell of 4 overs, 4 wickets for 16 runs by Chomo.  Sudarshan was also very impressive and quick in his 4 overs for 17 runs, however unfortunate not to be amongst the wickets . Imdad accounted for 3 wickets and Nigel 1 wicket with a runout rounding off the loss of 9 wickets by the opposition. Bowling appearances by Nic and Sid.  Three of their batters  made it into double figures  with extras accounting for around 28. A total score of 122. A very convincing win.

Our gracious host David Hakes treated his nine guests to some hot dogs at his country style setting in the middle of the city. What a beautiful setting. Thank you David for a wonderful evening.

July 07, 2021 Outdoor Game report VS Royal Kings

Match Report Taverners Vs Royal Kings July 7 2021A pleasant sunny but cooler evening after all the heatTaverners batted first with Imdad (42) & Sid (23) putting on 76 for the 1st wicket after they departed nobody really troubled the scorer until the Skipper Chomo added a quick 18 not out. Other notables was a quick 2nd run by Ossie, a golden by Chris chopping the ball onto his stumps. The next highest scorer being wides with 17  for a total 127 for 6The Royal Kings dressed as though they had come straight from working at home in everything but pyjamas or a uniform. The score was kept by the umpire & there is little in the way of details but it appears that Karran took 2 for 20 Sid 2 for what looks like a lot in  his last over. Imdad confusing the batsman by taking no run up & Nick confusing everyone with slow deliveries over the keeper’s head. Royal Kings apparently reached the required total somewhere in Nicks over winning by 5 wickets. A very pleasant evening where much of the conversation involved England’s Non Penalty. But we did manage to put $42 into the social FundIt looks like from here on in post game gatherings will be official so ties will be worn or $5.00 paid into the social fund
