A day weather wise could have gone in any direction turned into a beautiful summer evening ideal for cricket. Never having played this late in the season, we accepted an invitation by the opposition in rescheduling this rained out tilt. With the numerous meandering routes due to road paving at the Park, parking had to be found other than Cricket Drive. Nevertheless the majority of the players were present for the 5.30 p.m. start time in this 18 over affair. Might I also add so was the equipment. We were required to use the North pitch. Allowing the centre pitch time to rest for the national tournament the following week.
Led once again by the take no prisoners approach to captaincy, I can only surmise we lost the toss as we set out in the field. Sid donned the keeping “glove” for this game, the second glove was a batting glove, as his bent appendage could not be accommodated in a regular keeping glove.
The surprise opening bowling attack of Hein and Nigel actually proved a good tactical start restricting the opposition to 23 runs and a wicket in the first four overs (a run out at the hand of Ravindra). For the most part the rest of the bowling attack seemed to lack ……consistency. Other than the keeper, everyone else got a chance at releasing the ball to the opposition. An over by Keith James brought howls from the spectators around the park. Two wides, a wicket from a smart catch by Garvin, followed by ten other trundles, most hit for boundaries. Philip was very discouraged as a spectator mouthing the words “is that how it looked when I bowled”. The opposition posted 145 for 4 with 17 wides. Three significant scores of 52n.o., 27 & 21. Two glaring dropped catches, Sid behind the stumps and the habitual catch dropper Ravi Ramoutar.
The skipper once again implored batters to go hard for the runs, if we fail we drink beer early. The first four overs kept pace with the run rate. Our batters seemed to go into a shell against what appeared to be very good bowling. Our batting looked lethargic until Ravindra scored a swashbuckling 49 off 24 balls. Nick Jones debut of his newly purchased bat brought in 4 runs n.o. or final score 120 for 6.
Fifteen took the invitation for a free first round of beer at Silver heights at Philip’s expense. Quite a bit of conversation, nothing of notable content. A really good night and another successful season toasted.
