Aug 17, 2022 Outdoor Game Report VS Bengal Tigers

A day weather wise could have gone in any direction turned into a beautiful summer evening ideal for cricket. Never having played this late in the season, we accepted an invitation by the opposition in rescheduling this rained out tilt. With the numerous meandering routes due to road paving at the Park, parking had to be found other than Cricket Drive. Nevertheless the majority of the players were present for the 5.30 p.m. start time in this 18 over affair. Might I also add so was the equipment. We were required to use the North pitch. Allowing the centre pitch time to rest for the national tournament the following week.

Led once again by the take no prisoners approach to captaincy, I can only surmise we lost the toss as we set out in the field. Sid donned the keeping “glove” for this game, the second glove was a batting glove, as his bent appendage could not be accommodated in a regular keeping glove.

The surprise opening bowling attack of Hein and Nigel actually proved a good tactical start restricting the opposition to 23 runs and a wicket in the first four overs (a run out at the hand of Ravindra). For the most part the rest of the bowling attack seemed to lack ……consistency. Other than the keeper, everyone else got a chance at releasing the ball to the opposition. An over by Keith James brought howls from the spectators around the park. Two wides, a wicket from a smart catch by Garvin, followed by ten other trundles, most hit for boundaries. Philip was very discouraged as a spectator mouthing the words “is that how it looked when I bowled”. The opposition posted 145 for 4 with 17 wides. Three significant scores of 52n.o., 27 & 21. Two glaring dropped catches, Sid behind the stumps and the habitual catch dropper Ravi Ramoutar.

The skipper once again implored batters to go hard for the runs, if we fail we drink beer early. The first four overs kept pace with the run rate. Our batters seemed to go into a shell against what appeared to be very good bowling. Our batting looked lethargic until Ravindra scored a swashbuckling 49 off 24 balls. Nick Jones debut of his newly purchased bat brought in 4 runs n.o. or final score 120 for 6.

Fifteen took the invitation for a free first round of beer at Silver heights at Philip’s expense. Quite a bit of conversation, nothing of notable content. A really good night and another successful season toasted.

Aug 10, 2022 Outdoor Game Report VS Gladiators

TAVERNERS vs GLADIATORS
            August 10, 2022

Another beautiful evening at the park and Sid wins the toss and puts us in to bat

Garvin and Bobby open the batting and Garvin falls first , clean bowled for 8 with the score at 10….10 for 1 Wkt

Imdad joins Bobby and they run the score to 46 before Bobby falls, caught in the deep after adding 17 runs…46 for 2 Wkts

Hein joins Imdad and  added 8 runs before being caught with a bit of a miscue…51 for 3 Wkts after 8 overs

Anil joins Imdad and they run the score to 99 before Anil is out …99 for 4 Wkts

Ossie prances to the crease and after 3 cuts and glances edges one to the keeper who holds on after a couple of bobbles..113 for 5 Wkts after 16 overs

Nigel joins the fray and shortly thereafter Imdad is caught behind trying a sweep, after scoring 57 glorious runs..113 for 6 Wkts after 17 overs

Sid joins Nigel and delivers a smart 41 in just 15 deliveries, before being run out on the last ball of the game ,trying for one extra run

Total 161 for 7 Wkts with 16 extras

Two innings of more than 160 runs in a row…some record for the Taverners!!!

And so to the field we went…

The Gladiators were in the mood but after hitting 18 runs off the first two overs, their opening bat tried to get a short single which ended up with him being run out…18 for 1 Wkt

The next batsman joined the other opener, and they piled on a lot of runs before the number 3 was caught behind with the score at 52…52 for 2 Wkts after7 overs

Sid then bowled the new batsman and had the next batsman LBW, in the same over
52 for 4 Wkts after 8 overs

The next batsman was caught after a couple of balls and the score was 54 for 5 Wkts after 9 overs , a score that looked very impressive for the Taverners….

BUT

The next batsman Mohsin, with the opener Shari started to spank the bowlers all over the park with sixes and fours coming at an alarming rate

Soon it was 154 with 6 balls to go…..Yikes

The skipper kept his cool and asked Anil to bowl the last over

Anil was SUPERB allowing only 3 runs in the last over for a magnificent Taverner victory…it should be noted that Hein saved a possible four off the second last ball , nonchalantly picking up a high flyer on the boundary and whipping it back to the keeper

What a game:)!!!!!
What a victory….the second in 2 weeks ….chasing once and defending in the other!!!!!!

Drinks were at Anil’s ….whose last over saved the day.
Pick of the bowlers
Imdad 2 for 29 in 4 overs
Sid 2 for 17 in 4 overs

Pick of the batters
Imdad. 57
Sid 41 in 15 balls!!!!

Thanks to Anil for hosting 🙏

Aug 03, 2022 Outdoor Game Report VS Magnitude XI

Taverners vs Magnitude Xl
          Aug 3 2022

The Toss was lost by the Vice captain , Sid, who was in command of the team, with Chomo hanging out in Rome with family .

It was a beautiful warm evening and all was set for the game except we didn’t have our kit bag….so we had to borrow keeping gloves to get the game going….as the opposition had chosen to bat

First wicket came after just 7 runs when Ravindra , swinging the ball nicely, bowled one of the openers.

The second pair took the score quickly to 43 when Ravindra had the second opener caught in the deep by Nigel.

The next pair ran the score up, hitting sixes and fours with impunity. Several bowlers shared this onslaught until good old Ozzie was called upon and delivered in his second over, taking two wickets .

Score 123 for 3 and then 124 for 4 Wkts

Then the skipper allowed the score to run up to 162 before calling on The Englishman to “Have a go”….blimey Limey… can’t get any worse !!!

Well, what do you know, after a bit of an unsettled first over , Nigel proceeded to take 3 wickets in his 2nd over….with a hatrick that was not given as there was no square leg umpire to decide if the stumping was valid…. Which it was!! However Nigel accepted the verdict…like a true Englishman.

So they were done after 20 overs scoring 179 with extras.

180 to win

The skipper made it sure to his motley crew , that we were going to try and get this total or we were going drinking early.
We needed 9 per over and no messing about.

Garvin and Bobby opened and dutifully ran the score up to 55 after 6.3 overs…on target…before Garvin was bowled for 27  off 16 balls.

Mark joined Garvin and added a few before being bowled

Then Nigel joined Bobby, who was still hitting well , and they ran the score to112 for 3 before Nigel was caught for 15 SR 100

Ravindra joined Bobby and the two ran the score the score to about 140 when with 5 overs left the skipper pulled Bobby out at  55 not out, as he was feeling the heat

Sid entered the fray and struck a straight six on his first ball

Him and Ravindra put the score to 168 before Ravindra was run out on a goofy call however VB joined Sid , hit a 4  before being bowled

Needing 20 off the last 2 overs Kapila sauntered in and creamed a six and a four off his first two balls… so they needed 10 off 6 balls which they managed to get ..   getting the 180th run on the last ball of the game

Now that’s some win for the Taverners!!!!!!!

Well done to everyone as this was a team effort, in every sense of the word

Refreshments were at Nigel’s and thanks to him for hosting
