July 20, 2022 Outdoor Game Report vs Crescent Dragons

Crescent Dragons vs Taverners

A beautiful evening at the Waverley ground and with Sid’s inauspicious return Chomo returned to losing the toss, where upon the Dragons elected to bat.

They ran up 50 runs in the first four overs with Sudarshan and Chomo opening bowlers

Chomo then called on Amarpal to bowl…..her first ball went for six but then she had both openers caught in her next 2 balls….50 for 2 Wkts…setting up a hattrick ball in her first over with the Taverners…. unfortunately she did not get the wicket she so desired.

The next 2 batsmen took the score to 112 before they both retired…112 for 2 Wkts

Then Ravi bowled one of them but the new pair took the score to about 140 and then they retired…140 for 3 Wkts

The last pair added a few more sixes and there total was 172 for  4 Wkts…… a fine score indeed!

Bowling figures were a bit off!!!

Best was Amarpal with 2 for 25 after 4 overs

And so to bat……..Garvin and Amarpal to open…

Unfortunately Amarpal was caught behind after 3 deliveries with one of them a wide….1 for 1 Wkt

Next in, to join Garvin , was Andrew  and they added13 runs before Garvin was caught in the deep after a couple of beautiful 4’s….14 for 2Wkts

Next in was Ravi, and he added 4 to the score before being caught in the deep as well ……..19 for 3 Wkts

Next up, joining Andrew was Imdad  and he played some beautiful strokes, including a six into someone’s yard prompting a search for a replacement ball…..but their partnership ended when Andrew was caught….not in the deep.

57 for 4 Wkts…..a meagre score after some 10 overs

Sid meanwhile, with his useless ankle, was slagging all the batsmen from the stand and Anil was at the store fetching beer…of which Sid was more that happy to consume!!!!

Kapilla joined Imdad and together they added 25 quick runs before Imdad was caught in the deep….82 for 5 wkts

The rest is of non significance as the remainder of our tail after Kapilla and Sudarshan added 15 and 11 respectively

Taverners got to a total of 109, a couple shy of the total needed!

A good effort, but the opposition was a bit stronger on this day.

The team adjourned to Garvin’s residence but I was unfortunately unable to attend

Thanks to Garvin for hosting

July 13, 2022 Outdoor Game report VS Bloomfield

BLOOMFIELD vs  TAVERNERS

                 JULY 13 2022

Another spectacular Winnipeg evening at the park with Bloomfield looking to smash down the Taverners after a rain stopped game last year.
Chomo once again won the toss and elected to have the Taverners bat first

Our opening pair of Hein and Kapilla managed to get to 13 before Kapilla was well caught and had to leave the proceedings, whereupon Ravi joined the fray and the pair put on another 3 runs before Hein played on after scoring 12 of the 17 runs on the board…..17 for 2 wkts.

The slight but mighty Shalin entered stage centre, and batted cautiously with Ravi until with just 33 runs on the board Ravi was well caught at short extra cover to leave the score at 33 for 3 wkts……

Ravindra joined Shalin and the boys put together a partnership of 43 runs before Ravindra was caught , leaving the score at 83 for 4 , having contributed 8 runs in the 43 run partnership

Shalin was well set,  and when Ray joined him in the middle, Shalin once again showed what extreme talent he has, lofting several beautiful sixes to swell the score to 103 before being well caught in the covers .His contribution was 60 precious runs….107 for 5 Wkts.

Chomo joined Ray and they finished off the overs adding another 11 runs to help the Taveners to 118 runs.

Total score 118 ….98 runs and 20 extras.

And so the Taverners set out to defend a lowish score always remembering the old adage of “Runs on the board are runs scored”

Bloomfield’s opening pair started strongly, putting on 38 runs before Sudarshan forced one of them to be caught brilliantly by Chomo…38 for 1 Wkt…..the next batsman was then beautifully bowled next ball, by Sudarshan, setting up a possible hatrick, which the new batsman managed to prevent…..38 for 2 Wkts.

Game on:)…….

The next wicket came at 42 runs when one batsman sent a long catch to Sudarshan at the boundary….off a tricky Chomo delivery….42 for 3 Wkts.

The next pair managed to add 24 runs before Ravi came on to bowl and had the batsman caught on his first ball…66 for 4 Wkts

Tension on the field and off the field was rising.

Then , the next over Shalin, now a wiley spinner, managed to get one strong batsman out caught and then caused the next batsman to hit his own wicket setting up the second possible hatrick of the game, which the incoming batsman again prevented….77 for 6 Wkts….

But Bloomfield was not done yet, and their two batsman managed to get the score to 111 before Ravindra managed to get one of the pair out leaving Bloomfield 13 to get in 12 balls

Some masterful death bowling by Ravi and Ravindra prevented any further scoring and the Taverners prevailed…..

An exciting well fought victory with many important contributions from all players

After game festivities were at Hein’s house , where he cooked up wonderful burgers and where Ray , after his glorious Not Out innings, decided to go for a swim in the pool. Beer , courtesy of Jon was enjoyed by all…..

Many thanks to Hein for his  much appreciated hospitality

July 06, 2022 Outdoor Game report VS Lions

As the clock struck 6pm the skies opened and dumped heavy rain for about 10 minutes.
Then the sun came out and Chomo, having won the toss again!!!!, elected to bat.

Garvin and Kapila opened the batting and the latter was caught for 3 trying to hit hard and far, …..but not far enough.
El Presidente entered the fray only to find himself standing beside Garvin ….at the wrong end, trying to steal and extra run…27 for 2

Next up was Nick, who had some difficulty getting runs away while showing some good defence….until he was bowled leaving the club at 42 for 3.

Next up Ozzie the Octogenarian and he and Garvin played together for a short period until Garvin was well caught by a youngster, leaving the Taverners at 47 for 4 after 11 overs.🤔

Sudarshan was next up and he too departed after adding some 3 more runs. 50 for 5. A score sounding a lot like recent English teams!!!!

Enter Alex…striding to the wicket towering above the Lions lads…looking confident and cock sure and he did not disappoint!!

He and Ozzie …the impregnable…pushed the score to 82 when Ozzie retired with 2 overs left to allow our young gun Shalin the chance to add significantly to the score but alas the cricket gods were absent as he was bowled after adding just 1 run 🏃‍♂️…don’t worry Shalin…we still love you 😃

The skipper came out and he and Alex brought our total to 104 for 6 after 20….perhaps a wee bit shallow!!!

Taverners took to the field and the opening bowlers Nigel and Mark were knocked about a bit until their captain Imdad, yes our Imdad , pulled the two openers  after they had added some 30 runs.

Their next pair added more runs until the skipper asked Garvin to bowl which he did with Guyanese calmness and great cunning, bowling just 2 overs, taking 3 wickets, including a nice stumping by Shalin, for 0 runs.

Alas , even with the efforts of Alex , who picked up two wickets, the Lions made the 104 with ease….though the scorebook looked a bit dogey!!

The after event was at Chris’ place and with fabulous food from Roy and Bonita we had a lovely evening with a clam warm night, and great camaraderie 😊

A new trophy was unveiled and will be played for on a yearly basis, both indoor and outdoor.
