Dr. Peter N. Porritt passed peacefully in Winnipeg on August 23, 2019.
Adored and loved by his family; his wife of 65 years, Mary Porritt; sons, Howard (Helen), Julian (Stephanie), Trevor (Arlene) and Ashley (predeceased); grandchildren, Andrew, Alex, Danielle, Mackenzie, Grayson, Alana, and Christy.
Born in Penzance, England, educated at King’s School Canterbury and trained at The London Hospital and the Royal National Orthopedic Hospitals. During the Second World War Peter served in the RAF. In 1958 Peter and his family immigrated to Winnipeg where he continued his medical career. Amongst many accomplishments he served as Chief of Orthopedics at the Grace Hospital and taught medicine at the University of Manitoba.
Peter was an avid cricketer and field hockey enthusiast. He formed the Taverner’s Cricket Club and served as President of the Manitoba Cricket Association. He started field hockey in Manitoba. Peter organized field hockey for the 1967 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, with his international career spring boarding from there to encompass five Olympic Games and culminating in the 1999 Pan American Games again back in Winnipeg. Peter served as a member of the Pan American Hockey Federation (PAHF) for decades. He also served for many years on the International Field Hockey Federation (FIH) and is an honorary lifetime member. In 2000 Peter was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame as a builder.
The last days of Peter’s life were spent in the excellent care of the staff at West Park Manor Personal Care Home. They were always kind and respectful. We thank them with our deepest appreciation.
